| Abstract: The Fourth National Survey of Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs) 2026 aims to
analyze the structural conditions and evolution of the Costa Rican business sector through the generation of rigorous and nationally representative primary data. The study is led by the MSME Observatory (OMiPYME) of the Universidad Estatal a Distancia (UNED), in academic collaboration with the Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica (TEC), and with technical support from the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR).
The research will characterize MSMEs in terms of formalization, access to finance, digitalization,
employment, economic performance, and business resilience, as well as identify structural gaps and factors associated with growth and productivity. The results will generate indicators comparable with previous editions, consolidating a national time series.
Expected outputs include a national technical report, systematized databases, academic publications, and strategic dissemination products, providing technical evidence to support public policy formulation, institutional decision-making, and the strengthening of the national business ecosystem |
