Abstract:

Human–wildlife interactions go as far back as the origin of the earliest civilizations. Nowadays, rapid spatial and demographic growth in our cities increase the frequency of these interactions, causing numerous environmental conflicts, and invoking the need to investigate these conflicts to try to understand and mitigate them. Currently, social initiatives dedicated to species protection are playing a major role, demanding a new perspective towards the man-nature relationship, and consequently towards the man-fauna one as well. Besides this, some animals do not appeal to people’s sympathy, often due to fear or traditional beliefs, which results in anthropic harm to animal species that, nonetheless, actually benefit us. Bats represent one of these cases, as it is one of the more stigmatized and less understood animal groups. Many myths, without any scientific or logical basis, encircle these animals’ figure; while, in contrast, bats form a fundamental part of healthy ecosystems and provide valuable economic and environmental benefits. They play very important roles in diverse ecological processes, such as the maintenance and regeneration of tropical forests. Additionally, the directly benefit us through the effective removal of insects that are pests in agricultural areas or disease vectors. The bat coexistence conflict may be mainly due to their bad reputation, which largely stems from ignoring the significant benefits they provide to the ecosystems and the society. Within this context, this research project aims to analyze human-bat coexistence in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, with the goal of bringing educational tools that would help to enable a healthy and safe environment for all parties. The literature indicates that our perceptions, conceptions and the ways in which we interact with nature are generally built in a collective way, rather than individually, and that they usually influence how different species associate with the human population as well as the usefu
